A breathtaking, brilliantly run Milford Sound day

From start to finish, our Luxe Tours trip to Milford Sound was exceptional, and a huge part of that was our guide, Tommy. He seemed to have an endless, effortless command of the area’s ecology and geology — from how glaciers carved the fiords to why the temperate rainforest thrives and how the waterfalls and wildlife change with the seasons. His commentary turned every viewpoint into a mini masterclass, making the day not just jaw-droppingly beautiful but genuinely educational. The buses were just as impressive: spacious seats with real leg room and generous headspace meant we stayed perfectly comfortable, even though a good portion of the experience is the scenic drive itself. Large windows, smooth driving, and well-timed comfort stops kept everyone relaxed and focused on the views rather than the clock. A personal highlight was chatting through my South Island itinerary with Tommy. He happily fine-tuned it on the spot, sharing local tips for great food stops and recommending trails that matched our fitness and time. That level of care and insider knowledge is rare and made the rest of our trip better. My only regret is missing Luxe Tours’ upcoming Walter Peak experience — it sounds like a fantastic way to see New Zealand from a different perspective. If it’s anything like our Milford day, it will be unmissable. Five stars, without hesitation.
